Sofonisba
Sofonisba Anguissola (1532-1625) is one of the new artists being considered for the revised Art Humanities curriculum, as well as the subject of a new book by Professor Michael Cole, Sofonisba’s Lesson: A Renaissance Artist and Her Work (forthcoming 2019). A rare female painter of the Renaissance, Sofonisba was court painter to the Spanish king Philip II and was considered a leading portrait painter of her time, influencing painters like Anthony Van Dyke, Peter Paul Rubens, and Caravaggio.
