Gospels of Luke and John
Two of the four New Testament works that tell the “good news” of the life, sayings, and acts of Jesus of Nazareth, the Gospels of Luke and John also offer sophisticated meditations on Christian philosophy. Luke’s Gospel, the longest of the four, is likely the work of a Greek convert to Christianity, who wished to reach a broad, educated audience. John’s Gospel is the most philosophically advanced, opening with the Greek-inspired line, “In the beginning was the word.” These works not only introduce students to important Christian narratives and themes but they also show the range of Biblical writings, which drew on both earlier Jewish religious and Greek philosophical texts.
