Inferno

Dante

Date of Birth
1265 CE
Date of Death
1321 CE

The first part of Dante’s Divine Comedy shows the author, guided by Vergil, making a descent through hell in the first stage of his journey to redemption. There he encounters noble heathens and sinners of all kinds, some known to him personally. The Inferno ends with Dante beginning his upward trek, climbing towards Jerusalem on Easter Sunday. The first great literary work written in Italian rather than Latin, the Divine Comedy offers one of the richest interpretations of Christian thought while alluding to earlier works like those of Plato and Vergil. But it is for its depiction individual’s inner struggle to live a worthy life that it continues to inspire.
