While set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic wars, Pride and Prejudice explores the more domestic concerns of courtship and marriage. Juxtaposing the evolution of the relationship between Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy against the fixed nature of the pairings of Jane Bennett and Mr. Bingley or Lydia Bennett and George Wickham, the novel is a study on the nature of character -- how we build self-awareness of what and whom we value, how we are influenced by others’ virtues and vices, and how we can strengthen our own character through honest self-reflection.
