The first work on the Lit Hum syllabus by an American author, Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon tells the story of Macon “Milkman” Dead III and his family over the course of three decades. Morrison draws on the language and cultural traditions of African Americans to explore the legacy of slavery, the ongoing depredations of racism, and the questions about identity and home.
